“The Legal Personhood of Animals: Philosophical Developments” ( Français & English)
Biographie:
Virginie Simoneau-Gilbert étudie présentement en Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) à
l’Université d’Oxford grâce au soutien de la bourse Rhodes. En août 2020, elle a également
complété une maîtrise en philosophie à l’Université de Montréal sous la direction de Christian
Nadeau et Valéry Giroux. Son mémoire examine l’extension de la personnalité juridique aux
animaux non humains en droit civil. Ses champs de spécialisation incluent l’éthique, l’éthique
animale et la philosophie du droit. Elle s’intéresse aussi à l’histoire de la cause animale. En mai
2019, elle a signé l’ouvrage Au nom des animaux. L’histoire de la SPCA de Montréal (1869 – 2019) qui
s’inscrit dans le cadre du 150e anniversaire de l’organisation. Il s’agit du premier livre dédié à
l’histoire de la cause animale au Québec.
“Confronting a Climate of Exclusion: A Disability Rights Approach to Environmental Law” (English)
Biography:
Prof. Sébastien Jodoin is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law at McGill University, where he holds the Canada Research Chair (tier 2) in Human Rights, Health, and the Environment. His research focuses on the relationship between human rights and climate change; transnational and comparative climate law and governance; and the role of disability rights in addressing environmental and health challenges. His work on has been cited by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. As a scholar living with multiple sclerosis, he leads a new research programme focused on Disability-Inclusive Climate Action in collaboration with disability and climate activists and scholars from around the world. A 2011 Trudeau scholar, he holds a Ph.D. in environmental studies from Yale University, an M.Phil. in international relations from the University of Cambridge, an LL.M. in international law from the London School of Economics, and B.C.L. and LL.B degrees from McGill University.
“Les droits des animaux: Du devoir d’éviter la souffrance non nécessaire à l’antispécisme et ses implications” (Français)
Biographie:
Valéry Giroux est juriste et docteure en philosophie. Elle occupe le poste de coordonnatrice au Centre de recherche en éthique, où elle poursuit ses recherches en éthique animale. Elle est aussi professeure associée à la Faculté de droit de l’Université de Montréal (Québec, Canada) et Fellow du Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics. Elle donne régulièrement des conférences et intervient dans les médias à propos des droits des animaux, de l’éthique animale et du véganisme. Elle est l’autrice de Contre l’exploitation animale (L’Âge d’homme) et Le Véganisme (Puf, co-écrit), deux ouvrages parus en 2017. Elle a également publié en 2020 un deuxième livre dans la collection « Que sais-je? » des Puf, celui-là intitulé L’antispécisme.
